![]() ![]() I also tracked down the scientists who appeared on television in what seemed like an endorsement of Spore's scientific content on the National Geographic channel. According to the scientists, the problem isn't just that Spore dumbs down the science or gets a few things wrong-it's meant to be a game, after all-but rather, it gets most of biology badly, needlessly, and often bizarrely wrong. When it comes to biology, and particularly evolution, Spore failed miserably. So over the past month, I've been playing Spore with a team of scientists, grading the game on each of its scientific themes. Wow! In an $11 billion game industry dominated by dull and bloody “first-person shooters”-not to mention a country where five out of 10 people do not accept evolution-a blockbuster game like Spore that communicates science to the public is sorely needed. Last month in an hour-long show on the National Geographic channel, the game's creator, Will Wright, spoke with biologists about “the breakthrough science that's revealing the secret genetic machinery that shapes all life in the game Spore.” A DVD of this show is even included in the “galactic edition” of the game. “Begin your odyssey at the dawn of life as a simple microbe just trying to survive,” reads a Spore marketing blurb, embarking on “an epic journey that takes you from the origin and evolution of life through the development of civilization.” Not only was Spore to be packed with evolutionary biology, but the game's science promised to be solid right down to the molecular level. : Beasty_Boy_notworking.When I first heard about the computer game Spore, I couldn't think of a cooler way to celebrate Charles Darwin's 200th birthday. The original Collada file: Beasty Boy.daeĪ working STL file: Beasty_Boy_working.stlĪ not working STL file (I'm pretty sure I'm using the same process I did to get the working one). I need a Blender expert to get me out of this bind. I'm thinking the problem has to do with the object not being manifold though I've tried going into edit mode, hitting ctrl+shift+alt+'m' to select holes, and using 'f' to fill them with no success. ![]() I myself am having problems with a bunch of the models slicing in skeinforge (i keep getting "ZeroDivisionError: float division"). obj have "NGons as FGons", "Lines as Edges", and "Keep Vert Order" selected. Now just go File->Import->(.obj) or (.3ds)įor. obj you need to un-tick both boxes ("triangulate" and "bake deformations"). 3ds without changing any of the settings. fbx file in the left hand pane (remove the. Then before doing anything else hit convert. I found a great tutorial on how to get around this problem using a free Autodesk converter (scroll down… the stand-alone converter is in the middle of the page). dae directly into blender (I think because blender can't handle Collada 1.4.1?). You'll be presented with a EULA that you have to agree to and it will save the model in My Docuements/My Spore Creations/Creatures. Then just type in 'colladaexport' (omit the quotes) and press enter. This will bring up some sort of cheat window. When you're in the paint tab hit ctrl+shift+c. Go into spore and load your favorite creature in the creature creator. It took the better part of an afternoon to figure this out so I thought I'd share my knowledge to make it a bit easier for you. Unfortunately it's only for Windows at the moment but I think we're expecting the Mac release any day now. So I guess in the latest Spore patch (1.05) they added support for exporting the creature models as Collada (.dae) files. ![]()
